Do children stay at Catherine House?
No, Catherine House provides support and accommodation for women unaccompanied by children.
You provide emergency accommodation – but why can’t I get accommodation at Catherine House tonight?
Unfortunately, due to limited beds and increased demand, we have around 35–45 women on a waitlist each night. Our intake worker triages potential clients based on highest risk and need. Please ring our office on (08) 8232 2282 (option 2) to speak with our intake worker about any accommodation options. The sooner you can be added to our wait list the better.
Are you associated with the Catholic Church?
While Catherine House embraces its Catholic history, being founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1988, we are now a non-denominational charity running independently of the Catholic Church.
Why did you merge with Housing Choices South Australia?
In January 2021 we joined the Housing Choices Group of Companies to become part of Housing Choices South Australia. The merger combined our decades of experience in transitioning women out of homelessness, with the significant capacity of a capable and efficient community housing provider. Providing the women we support with increased housing options within the community.

How is Catherine House funded?
Catherine House is funded in a variety of ways. Our Recovery Program is funded by SA Health, our Permanent Supported Accommodation Program is fully funded by the NDIS, and our Crisis Accommodation Service is partially funded by State Government, with the generous community funding the rest. Our Crisis Accommodation Service is our core service, and the most under-funded. We rely on the generosity of the community to keep our doors open 24/7 to women experiencing homelessness. Currently we receive less than 50% of funding from the State Government.
Who works at Catherine House?
We have approximately 45 staff members who work tirelessly to end homelessness for the women we support. With a small administration team to support, our team of case workers and community service workers (with backgrounds in psychology, social work and community service), work across our three main programs. We also have a dedicated team of volunteers and tutors in our Women’s Centre, who support the educational and wellbeing needs of the women we support.
