Crisis Accommodation
The Catherine House Crisis Accommodation Service was established in 1988 and remains the only homelessness service for women unaccompanied by children in South Australia.
The service offers a safe and secure place for women to go when they are experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness.
The service is staffed 24/7 and provides accommodation and support services for women. An Intake worker assesses referrals for vacancies as they become available. This is (on average) 45-55 women each month. Women are assisted to manage their safety while they are waiting for a place at Catherine House.
Women who are 18 years and older and unaccompanied by children are able to be referred to Catherine House. Referrals to the Crisis Accommodation Service are accepted from all sources, including other homelessness services, hospitals, GPs, SAPOL, or directly from women seeking accommodation.
Every Catherine House client is provided with her own bedroom, shared bathroom and lounge/dining facilities. Upon arrival, women receive a welcome pack including new sleepwear, underwear and toiletries. All meals are provided.
Every woman who arrives at Catherine House is allocated a case worker and is offered intensive case work support. Case workers work with each client to address the issues that resulted in their homelessness. Together, they work towards finding safe and affordable accommodation upon leaving the program and are linked with other support services within the community.
A core focus at Catherine House is to end the homelessness for women – for good.
A number of partnerships exist to support women, including:
- Medical support through a visiting General Practitioner
- Financial support and counselling
- Legal support and guidance
- Direct support through Centrelink
- Drug and Alcohol support through DASSA
- Counselling/Psychological support
- Wellbeing, social and personal development activities through the Catherine House Women’s Centre
