Addressing Family Domestic Violence: Our Collective Responsibility

Family Domestic Violence (FDV) is a critical issue that affects countless individuals and families. It is not just a matter of concern—it is a responsibility that we all share.

At Catherine House, we see firsthand the profound impact FDV has on women and their families. This issue is deeply personal to us, over 36years we have dedicated our service to supporting those who are not adequately protected by society.

When we say FDV is “everybody’s business,” we acknowledge that it impacts our communities, workplaces, and society at large. However, recognizing it as “everybody’s responsibility” goes a step further. It means each of us must take active steps to address and prevent it.

Our approach to supporting women includes:

• Supporting survivors of domestic violence by providing a range of housing and service response options

• Providing access to a diverse range of opportunities from where they can choose to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

• Providing advocacy platforms for women to share their lived experience to help raise awareness and inspire involvement from the community.

• Taking every action to support survivors of domestic violence, sending a powerful message: you are not alone, and your safety and dignity matter.

• Creating a safe environment for survivors through collective effort, compassion, understanding, and commitment from all of us.

From supporting survivors and advocating for stronger policies to educating ourselves and others, every action counts.

Community Collaboration: At Catherine House, we work closely with community stakeholders and funders to address DFV. Our partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations enable us to provide comprehensive support services. These collaborations help us secure funding, resources, and volunteer support, ensuring that we can continue to offer vital services to those in need.

Issue Focused Events: The “What Women Hold” exhibition at the Kerry Packer Gallery, showcases powerful true stories of women’s complex experiences of homelessness through mixed-media art. It is a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength women hold to feel safe, thrive, and be celebrated. The Collaborative Piece “Know My Name” is another significant work that highlights the voices and experiences of DFV survivors. This piece is part of a broader movement to recognize and honor the stories of those who have faced and overcome domestic violence.
